The château de Chenonceau is undoubtedly one of the most famous private castles in France. Located in Indre-et-Loire, built at the beginning of the XVIth century, this castle intrigues by its particular architecture and its long gallery over the Cher River. Chenonceau Castle is also known as the “Ladies Castle” since several great ladies have marked the history of this castle. It was Katherine Briçonnet who built it, then it was embellished by Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medicis. At the French Revolution, it was saved by Madame Dupin and then it was a military hospital during the First World War.

The visit of the castle is a self-guided tour (explanatory document available in 16 languages) or with audioguide (11 languages available). The furnished interior of the castle can be visited, as well as its beautiful park! In the park, there are various French gardens frequently renewed, a vegetable maze … You will also be able to observe various animals: donkeys in a park, wild ducks and other birds, squirrels in the trees (keep your eyes open), etc.

Several restaurants are present in the property. A picnic area is also at your disposal.

We had the chance to visit this castle on numerous occasions (last visit in August 2014). Given the success of this castle, we advise you to visit it at the beginning of the day or to avoid the peak tourist season. The castle is open every day of the year. To avoid queues for ticket purchases, you can buy them online or at the on-site ticket dispensers, which will allow you to avoid queues at the ticket counter.

We highly recommend you to visit this castle. If you like flowers, you will be conquered both by the gardens, and by the numerous and beautiful bouquets inside the castle.
